Dear Colleagues,
Disorders of the optic nerve are known as optic neuropathies. The most common categories of diseases affecting the optic nerve are inflammation (optic neuritis), ischemia (ischemic optic neuropathy), compression/infiltration (neoplastic or non-neoplastic), hereditary, degenerative, toxic/nutritional, traumatic, and raised intracranial or intraocular pressures (glaucoma). It can be an anterior optic neuropathy (swelling of the optic nerve head), or a posterior / retrobulbar optic neuropathy (optic nerve head appears normal).
Inflammatory optic neuropathies can be related to idiopathic demyelinating optic neuritis (associated with multiple sclerosis), neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-associated optic neuritis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), systemic infections, and systemic inflammatory diseases. Inflammation of the optic nerve is known as optic neuritis (ON).
The book titled "Strabismus, Neuro-ophthalmological Disorders, and Management in the Pediatric Population" is a comprehensive book that includes specific diagnoses in the pediatric group. We would like to thank everyone who made valuable contributions and hope that this book will be useful to readers.
